Launching Other Apps (iPhone OS)

One of the underlying coolest and hidden aspects of the iPhone is the ability to open applications with URL schemas. The core schemas on the iPhone include SMS, Mail, and Telephone. However, a host of third party applications register their own schema. This means you can use HomeMarks to interact and/or launch these applications.

Edit box for openURL schema examples. So how do you take advantage of this? Here are two examples to the right. You are looking at the edit box screen with two bookmarks. One is a SMS message to a phone number, the other is the URL schema for the popular iPhone app Tweetie. The second link will launch Tweetie and allow you to seed them a tweet. Very useful for those friends that do not tweet often. Here are the URLs I used below.

  sms://17575551212
  tweetie://user?screen_name=metaskills

HomeMarks openURL error message. Remember, if a bookmark can not be opened from HomeMarks, it is usually because of bad formatting or sometimes the application that handles that URL is not on the system any longer. Information is sporadic on schemas by 3rd party applications, consult the author of your favorite apps to find out if and what types of URLs they support.
